Mandatory Liability Insurance - Login


The Alabama Mandatory Liability Insurance Law provides that no person shall operate, register, or maintain registration of a motor vehicle designed to be used on a public road or highway unless it is covered by a liability insurance policy. §32-7A-3, Code of Alabama 1975.

Pursuant to Act 2016-361 if a person involved in a motor vehicle incident was in violation of the mandatory liability insurance law and did not receive a citation at the time of the incident, they are subject to a civil penalty. A motor vehicle incident is defined as "an incident involving the driver of a motor vehicle when a traffic citation was issued by a law enforcement officer or the driver of a motor vehicle was involved in an accident and an accident report was filed".

What this means to you: You are subject to a civil penalty if:

  • You were involved in a motor vehicle incident and
  • The vehicle you were driving was not insured with the required liability insurance and
  • You were not issued a citation for no insurance at the time of the incident.
